Hollyoaks is the best soap. I think the reason more HOs actors make it in the US is that they are generally beautiful people. That's not a dig though, certain kind of shows want a certain look and the actors from HOs have got it, doesn't mean they can't be decent, obviously they aren't always decent but Ricky Whittle for instance has surprised a lot of people.
Me included. I bloody hated Calvin and thought Ricky was terrible but loved him in American Gods. No way around the fact that he got cast because he is a walking work of art though. Same goes for Natalie in Game of Thrones.
I don't look down on the show but I don't think it's very good, it's not even very good at being trashy and bad. Formulaic and repetitive. If, as Mo says they didn't take themselves seriously then I would have more respect. For a start, the acting isn't meant to be Bafta-worthy. Nor do the scripts need to be too realistic — if we want to keep abreast of what is really going on, we'll watch the news. My friends and I watch Hollyoaks to catch a glimpse of a world that is less mundane than ours.
We want to be consumed by situations that could arise in real life believe it or not, it does maintain some sense of realism but never usually do. We know Hollyoaks isn't the best, most realistic thing on TV, but we watch it to escape for 30 minutes, to look at nice boys and girls, and their fashion choices. Chuggington is just as bad. The male trains get to do it all the time, without question.
Not only are female characters in these shows shoved in supporting roles, they are often shown to fail at critical moments to allow the boys to show off their bravery. Back to Octonauts — another female character, Dashi, finally gets to leave the ship but then has to be rescued. And to make matters worse, these characters all have pink accessories or clothes with the exception of Koko who gets purple.
