We will be playing a great selection of songs from all of our records, including all of the fan favorites, rarely played songs, and a few songs that you guys keep begging us to play live. We encourage you to keep your inner flame burning and show it off to the rest of the world! Murphy may keep his musical background under wraps, but Jimmy Ryan — Haste the Day's vocalist until — has fun with his legacy.
Ryan said he recently overheard a conversation between two youngsters as he walked past a Hot Topic store at Castleton Square mall. Established in Carmel by the Chaulk brothers and Murphy, Haste the Day ranks as one of Indiana's most successful acts of the 21st century. The band sold more than , albums and toured the globe.
One indication of Haste the Day's stature was its headlining appearance at Mexico's Exodo Fest was April 18, a warm-up date for the May 2 show in Indianapolis. Brennan said the band's formula of delivering a Christian message wrapped in a sonically brutal package hasn't changed.
Faith remains an emphasis for Devin Chaulk, who attends Redeemer Presbyterian Church and plays drums there once a month, and Ryan, who does volunteer work with teenagers at an East Side church. It was just something that very few people experienced, and growth was slow and organic and natural.
As a band starting in that, we experienced that organic growth, and I think it was really good for the band to slowly grow like that. It just seems like a really forced way to do it. That breeds a passion for it. That was the vibe of the scene a decade ago when we started this. On our first tour, we played this living room in Louisiana somewhere.
It was maybe ten feet by ten feet. It was awkward, but awesome. He told us about that later. Those shows matter to the people that are there, and I remember that show. Oh, I have one more great memory to talk about. We were completely broke. We stayed at a cheap motel and would raid the continental breakfast every morning — stocking up on muffins and everything to be able to eat throughout the day — and even then we would try and scrounge up change to get something off the Taco Bell dollar menu.
Living Sacrifice is from Little Rock, we met them when we played a couple shows there. That was such an amazing thing for him to do — and they were one of those bands we totally idolized.
For him to do that for us while recording our first record made a huge impact on us. Haste The Day The Future Return of Haste the Day They weathered a number of storms to last for as long as they could, but, as they say, all good things must come to an end.
Or do they? The personalities of the two vocalists are both on display with their different approaches to stage performance. The drums are characteristically over-powering with the vocals fading in-and-out as the two vocalists engage the audience.
And any live album is going to fall into a rather specialized category: fans of the band will dig it. If you're unfamiliar with Haste the Day, then this isn't for you. But anyone who enjoys this band even more casual fans may find the live sound welcome, particularly if they never got the chance to see them live. Both of the band's lead vocalists sound on par with their best studio work, and Jimmy Ryan's vocals and stage presence beg the question whether his new band Trenches has been doing Haste the Day covers at rehearsals.
His voice sounds just as poisonous now live as it did during his heyday with the band. Contrasting with the more traditional but more crowd friendly vocal work of Stephen Keech. And may this album stand as a testament to Haste the Day both past and present when everything falls away. Tweet Recent reviews by this author.
