A well-written, thought-provoking book. This book is a glorious exploration of the nature of friendship, tenacity, fear, and most importantly, kindness. Auggie's parents. Palacio writes with just the right balance of humor and pathos, making each character both flawed and sympathetic. She "gets" kids -- how they think, how they talk, how they have the capacity to be both horribly mean and incredibly brave and kind. It's well-written, engaging, and so much fun to read that the pages almost turn themselves.
More than that, WONDER touches the heart in the most life-affirming, unexpected ways, delivering in August Pullman a character whom readers will remember forever. Do yourself a favor and read this book — your life will be better for it. I dare you not to fall in love with Auggie Pullman. Every single character seems real and well drawn and oh-so human This book is beautiful.
There are many real and well-developed characters, and they each have their shining moments. Of course, Auggie shines the brightest. One comes away from it wanting to be a better person. I'm totally in love with this novel. Space Oddity. Beautiful Things.

So much of what is being written now is clap-trap and trite, canned and smooth, without the grip of something solid for me to hold onto. I started reading the first lines, stumbling over the foreign-sounding, archaic words as gracefully as possible, and came to this line:. The words took my breath away, the alliteration and simplicity and depth.
This week a mentor asked me to think about what God was up to during a particularly puzzling time. And have you encountered Chaucer in its original middle English without a translation? Or real Old English, which looks like a different language entirely middle English you can sound your way through generally? Needless to say, it was a dark moment for Earth's heroes when that happened. Though fans know Billy Batson's origins, they tend to think of him as a standard superhero. This is far from the truth. Basically, once he becomes Shazam , he's the convergence of five separate gods. In reality, this makes him more powerful and smarter than even Superman. True, the Man of Steel can absorb power from the sun and knowledge from studying.
However, Shazam's skills are built into his DNA when transformed. While not omnipotent, he's definitely closer to a god than a mortal man. Darkseid has a problem. Besides his inept lieutenants, that is. His ego is enormous. Most of the time it's what gets him in trouble and stops him from taking the next step into godhood. Take his role in Deceased as an example. He was so sure he would obtain omnipotence by combining various items with the Anti-Life Equation.
In the end, all he did was destroy himself and transform the media-happy residents of Earth into zombies. Despite his amazing powers, Darkseid can be as dense as his rocky skin.
Like Shazam, Wonder Woman isn't a regular superhero. She's the daughter of Zeus and Hippolyta. If that doesn't make her a god then the definition needs to be reexamined.
She has more than raw power that makes her strong. She's a mixture of lover and warrior, and that makes her a potent character. For instance, in Death Metal she decided to sacrifice herself as a fighter to save the Multiverse and those that were precious to her. This is what makes a true god.
