Eisenhower , presented the United States Congress with an opportunity to cater to the needs of the industry. While Mint Director Mary Brooks lobbied for the coin to be struck in silver, Congress instead chose to strike the coin for circulation in the same copper-nickel Cu-Ni clad composition in use for the dime and quarter dollar. In a compromise, silver-clad versions were authorized to be struck and sold to collectors.
Signed into law by President Richard M. First-year production totals were large 47,, for Philadelphia business strikes and 68,, for Denver , but these paled when compared to the mintage of the Kennedy half dollar , which was struck in Cu-Ni clad for the first time this same year.
While hundreds of millions of Eisenhower dollars were struck, with many millions entering circulation, the coin was more of a novelty than it was useful for the purposes of commerce.
The Denver Mint began production of the Eisenhower dollar a few weeks before Philadelphia. Creating a Cu-Ni Eisenhower dollar—a large, silver-dollar format coin—proved to be quite a technical challenge. Coins struck at Denver typically have a sharper, cleaner look.
Many are fully lustrous, and some were struck on highly polished planchets. Despite this overall cleaner look, the D Eisenhower dollar does have a tendency to show significant amounts of die sink along the bottom periphery. As the business strike Eisenhower dollar was not issued in U. Mint annual sets until , examples that survive in Mint State were saved from circulation.
For some reason, more D Eisenhower dollars turn up in Mint State in quantity than examples of the P. Premiums do increase from these levels when dealing with certified coins. I hope this helps! Josh CoinValues. Hi, Janice! In a high uncirculated or proof grade they can fetch some good money. Hello, I have a Silver dollar and a silver dollar inline condition the has a 's' on it, all a silver dollar, does anyone know the worth?
Perhaps you have a D Denver Eisenhower dollar? Or one without a mintmark at all? If that's the case, you have a copper-nickel clad Eisenhower dollar. Best, Josh. Can someone help, please? Hello, Shannon -- It sounds like you have a gold-plated Eisenhower dollar coin, as none were minted in gold. Such coins are considered altered and are collected as novelty pieces.
Thank you for your question, Josh CoinValues. Hello hope the day finds you well and in great spirits! Anyhow it is still in original cellophane that is rather browned. What does the star mean? After doing research on my Blue Ike I see that many are certified. In my case would I do better to save it for cert. If I offered it now would the value go up with a cert.?
Much appreciate your time. LOVE this site, extremely useful tool. Keep up the good work! Hello, Matt! It is great to hear from you.
Fantastic that your S Ike dollar is still in its original government envelope and holder. Some coin collectors are paying small but increasing premiums for coins such as these dollars in their government packages, as more and more are being cut out and removed from their cellophane holders every day. I would need to please see a photo of your Eisenhower dollar to see what you're asking about in regards to the globe. You may upload an image here in the comments forum. Where are you seeing the star listed near the expensive coins?
I ask because, based on the resource, this can mean a number of things. I'd love to help you much further in this reply, but without knowing the context of the star and the listings, I'm afraid I'm not much help at this point!
Coin Values continues to grow, and we appreciate your visiting this site. We are always happy to help however we can and look forward to assisting you with more of your questions and comments!
