The 8-speed chains we carry are 7. Chains for 9-Speed Drivetrains are 6. Front chainrings are less sensitive to the width of a chain, therefore SRAM 9-speed drivetrains can even use speed chains.

Campagnolo speed systems are compatible only with Campagnolo or aftermarket Campy-specific chains. Shimano's Dura-Ace , Ultegra , and groups are a little different.

According to Shimano, "optimal performance" is only possible with a corresponding asymmetric chains:. In our experience, any Shimano- or SRAM-compatible speed chain will work flawlessly with either brand of components.

Any Shimano- or SRAM-compatible speed chain can be used with any other Shimano speed groupsets, and with any SRAM speed groupset, regardless of manufacturer statements that their chains will provide optimal performance with their components. Shimano and SRAM speed chains are cross-compatible. If you have a Shimano speed drivetrain, a SRAM chain will work fine and vice versa, however manufacturer's recommend pairing your components for optimal performance.

SRAM was the first manufacturer to produce speed components. The SRAM Eagle speed chains are cross compatible with one another — the only variance between them is weight and material. With the new AXS eTap speed electronic road groups, SRAM developed flat top chains, which allows for a quieter drivetrain as well as added strength and durability.

Within these three groups, the flattop chains are cross-compatible i. Campagnolo also has their own proprietary speed chains that work with their groupsets, specifically the Chorus, the Record, and the Super Record 2x12 groups. While these chains are cross-compatible with one another, always keep Campy with Campy. The only component manufacturer to attempt speed cassettes is Campagnolo.

Recently, they released the 1x13 Ekar group for gravel bikes. This group has a special speed chain that is hyper specific for this group. Do not try to put a speed Campy chain on this group - it simply won't work.

We are committed to delivering outstanding value and service to our customers, every day. The downside is that the chain gets weaker. Hence why single-speed chains are so thick and strong whereas multi-speed chains are thinner and less robust. To achieve this effect, the chain has customized inner plates and subsequently its inner width is narrower than expected. The chain is simply too narrow to grab the teeth of the chainring. Hence why this hack is not recommended when longevity and top-level performance are the ultimate goal.

For that reason, the cassette has special ramps making it possible to switch gears without easing off the pedals which is the standard way to shift. By combining the chain with a SRAM cassette which will undoubtedly have a different design, one eliminates the benefits of using a Shimano speed chain.
