The deities born in any of the four immaterial planes possess only the mind with no physical body or sense organs. The deities in the four formless planes are not immortal. They remain in a blissful and refined state in extremely lengthy life spans but will then pass away and be reborn in another plane of existence.

The plane of boundless space akasanancayatana. Having attained the fourth fine material mental absorption fourth rupa Jhana and keeping that as the base, a meditator wishing to attain this formless Jhana, extends the limit of the initial meditation object infinitely and then contemplates on the emptiness of the infinite space akasa as the object of meditation. If this formless state of mental absorption happens to be the last consciousness at the time of death, the person will be reborn in the plane of boundless space enjoying pure mental bliss and rapture devoid of any passion or sensuality.

The life expectancy of the deities in this Brahma world is twenty thousand aeons or Kappas. The plane of boundless consciousness vinnanancayatana. Following the attainment of the state of boundless space, with further increase in concentration and by shifting the attention from infinite space to infinite consciousness vinnana without which the infinite space could not be realised, the plane of boundless consciousness is attained.

The life span of the deities in this formless Brahma world is forty thousand aeons or Kappas after which they will be reborn in any of the other planes of existence. The plane of nothingness akincannayatana. Having attained the sphere of boundless consciousness, the meditator who wishes to attain the sphere of nothingness, will focuses the attention on the absence of consciousness in the plane of boundless space. The life span of the deities in this formless Brahma world is sixty thousand aeons or Kappas.

The plane of neither perception nor non-perception nevasannanasannayatana. This is the topmost of the thirty one planes of existence. It will eventually lead to the plane of neither perception nor non-perception in which there are no gross perceptions but only very subtle perceptions. The life expectancy of the deities in this formless plane is eighty four thousand aeons or Kappas. Recommendation of Lord Gautama Buddha. Having described the Buddhist cosmology consisting of the thirty one planes of existence, the Buddha did not recommend the disciples to aim for rebirth in any of them.

Even though one can enjoy sensual pleasures in the sensual heavens and non-sensual pleasures in the twenty Brahma worlds for very long periods of time, they are transient and impermanent. They are still within the cycle of birth and death samsara , and one can be reborn in any of the other planes of existence including the realms of extreme suffering apaya. Devas with only the body and no mind asanna satta Asanna satta is also a fourth rupa Jhana Brahma world. Pure Abodes suddhavasa The remaining five rupa Brahma worlds are grouped together and are known as the Pure Abodes suddhavasa.

Durable devas aviha Aviha is the first of the five Pure Abodes.
