Now yesterday I said Im gonna try it again but with out any wax or anything that has petroleum in it. I saw a gel that i said I would use and its all natural products. I twisted my hair yesterday and it stayed since my hair is natural I never permed when i took out my locks so it made it easier to start again…. Tomorrow i will try the gel to make it look a lil bit neater.
Ill keep u posted….. Hiii Lucylocks!! I really like your idea of a small crochet hook. How exactly do I do that? Do I backcomb them still and then use a crochet hook at the end to twist?
Sorry if I sound silly…I have had mine for a month now. The ends are locking up pretty well, but the top half looks matted. They are coming loose at the top. I just got dreads yesterday using mango and lime locking firm wax. They look pretty nice but the only thing is that they still look a little white. I dont want to wash them just yet but do you guys know of anyway to get the look of the wax out.
Get a very small crochet hook, gel will clog up your hair and leave it covered in residue. The hook will make them neat and tight straight away and you can say they are totally natural with no nasty products.
Because I use the hook they are tight enough to wash once a week without them coming loose. I am really surprised more people dont know about this it really is the only way to make dreads sucessfuly. The patience required really is only while you are making them then hey presto they look like tight neat lovely dreads from day one. I started mine with beeswax initially, however spent the next few months or so washing my hair with hot water to flush out the wax slowly. It did take longer, and there was a decent period of messyness but the dreads themselves ended up being super tight and natted.
I cant stress this enough! Again, this process takes a while everything dready does! I remeber reading many peoples posts back when I first natted my hair, about patience, patience, patience. But just hang in there! I have dreaded about 30 peoples hair and I never use wax. The dreads look like they have been there for about 6 months straight away.
I use a very small crochet hook about 0. I swear by it you can use it to neaten them at the roots as they grow too. You do have to spend a little time on each dread but they genuinely look well taken instantly and will not fall loose. This method is used all over the world and makes the neatest locks. Go and buy a hook its cheap and you dont need to wake up with dreads stuck to your face. I also have combined two small dreads to make one dope dreadlock thats just sicknesssssss!
You know you've reached the mature stage when your locs are finally long enough to lie flat or hang down. The locs should be thick enough to support themselves. Odds are you'll be comfortable with your locs by now, and able to enjoy a regular shampooing and conditioning routine. Once your locs are firmly in place, you're officially in the rooted or "adult" stage. They feel heavier and at the same time more slender.
At this point, you'll be able to wear your locs well past your waist, or trim them if you want a more manageable style. What's more: Your haircare routine can be as simple or as complex as you like, although Faulk emphasizes that "Throughout each stage, you want to make sure you keep your locs hydrated.
If you're not comfortable with re-twisting or even choosing a starter loc hairstyle, you can always visit a professional loctician, who can guide you in the right direction. Mature: Months Rooted: Months. Does palm rolling really help dreads? My loctician trimmed my frizzies twice at the early stage of my dreads. For your next maintenance appointment, ask your loctician not to trim the frizz.
Have you done research on or do you have any experience with more conditioning dyes, like Lime Crime, NRage, or Lunar Tides? Would like to get dye out, but have no interest in bleach. Hi Jennifer! Chemical dyes can be more damaging to dreads than loose hairstyles because removing the dye from the inner parts of the locs is difficult. For this reason, I highly advise against it, but if you choose to do it anyway, I would recommend getting advice from a professional loctician who has experience dying locs.
Yes, frizz is definitely normal, especially within the first months. I am on my second month in loc journey land. My hair is down to my jawline. The first month I did nothing to my hair before retwisting after 5 weeks. Now, I am misting my hair with rosewater and oiling scalp with grapeseed and avacado oil. Is this normal??? Hi Reema! Unraveling is a normal part of the loc journey, especially during the first few months as your hair starts to adapt to locs and matures.
Thanks for the needed advice. How can one fix a bad dye result? I really should have not tried to dye my hair but know it just looks awful! Can this be fixed without causing more damage. Should I help them keep their retwist or allow them to do what they want? If the locs seem to be loosening or coming undone, I would recommend spritzing them with water and palm rolling them while the hair is damp. You can get them retwisted once every eight weeks or so.
My 10year son has had dreads since 5 years old. They are locked nice. Problem is around second year I tried to retwist with wax.
Now he has what look like dirty rings towards ends where the wax was, how can I remove the dirty rings. Best, Nadia. Should I redo them clockwise? Or can I retwist clockwise? Or retwist them the way they already are? His hair will take a long time to loc, do you recommend saltwater or a product like dollylocs?
Hi April, There are mixed opinions on which direction to retwist locs. The industry standard for locticians is clockwise. Whichever direction you choose to go with, however, always retwist in the same direction. If you change directions at some point, you risk interrupting the loc process and possibly causing breakage and unraveling.
As for products, I recommend making your own. Salt will dry out the hair so too much can be counterproductive in terms of keeping the locs healthy and moisturized. The weeks for re-twisting, is that A recommendation for already developed locks? How often should a beginner with say, 3 inches of hair twist? The longer you can wait, the better. The reasoning behind it is that you need to give your scalp enough time to recover from the tug and pull of each retwist.
Please what should I do? Hi Stella, frizz is part of the journey, especially in the beginning. Which method did you use to start your locs i. Yay, congrats!! And what happens with big thick locs?
Hi Jetaun! As new hair grows, the roots will always mingle and get messy. I love that you named it, by the way!! I hope that helps! I just started my pics late May. However, I just got them retwisted on Tuesday but did not wait for them to fully dry and now the roots are already swelling. Is that normal? I recommend waiting 6 to 8 weeks minimum between retwists. This time period allows your scalp to heal and helps prevent traction alopecia in the future.
Hi Esosa, How long have you had your locs for? I would be concerned about that. This was all great advice. If your roots are consistently too tight, then you risk permanent baldness traction alopecia.
Hey Im 4 weeks in, have delightful fuzz, have noticed a tightening of the locks. I wash my hair every other day, it sounds like this is too much? Always in the morning and my hair is chin length. Hi Claire! Hi Nadia. Thank you! What shampoos would you recommend? Hi Jay! I wrote an article about the benefits of aloe vera for locs and step-by-step instructions on how to extract the gel from the leaf and make your own scalp spray.
Let me know if you have any more questions. Finally we style..
