Exploring a robust question from William James. Blip or sea change? This is your body on carbs, in real time. Children could be dangerous carriers of virus. Every step counts. Up Next. But such consequences as this, you instinctively feel, are erroneous. It is quite obvious that something more than the mere possession of ideals is required to make a life significant in any sense that claims the spectator's admiration. Inner joy, to be sure, it may have, with its ideals; but that is its own private sentimental matter.
To extort from us, outsiders as we are, with our own ideals to look after, the tribute of our grudging recognition, it must back its ideal visions with what the laborers have, the sterner stuff of manly virtue; it must multiply their sentimental surface by the dimension of the active will, if we are to have depth, if we are to have anything cubical and solid in the way of character. The significance of a human life for communicable and publicly recognizable purposes is thus the offspring of a marriage of two different parents, either of whom alone is barren.
The ideals taken by themselves give no reality, the virtues by themselves no novelty. To recognize ideal novelty is the task of what we call intelligence. Not every one's intelligence can tell which novelties are ideal. For many the ideal thing will always seem to cling still to the older more familiar good.
In this case character, though not significant totally, may be still significant pathetically. But ideal aspirations are not enough, when uncombined with pluck and will. But neither are pluck and will, dogged endurance and insensibility to danger enough, when taken all alone. There must be some sort of fusion, some chemical combination among these principles, for a life objectively and thoroughly significant to result. Of course, this is a somewhat vague conclusion.
But in a question of significance, of worth, like this, conclusions can never be precise. He is quite taken by this place—the music, athletics, religious services, soda fountains, lack of poverty, drunkenness, and crime. James spends a week in Chautauqua, but no more. He realizes that this lakeside paradise, for all its security, intelligence, humanity and order, is missing something. He finally realizes what it is: But in this unspeakable Chautauqua there was no potentiality of death in sight anywhere, and no point of the compass visible from which danger might possibly appear.
The ideal was so completely victorious already that no sign of any previous battle remained, the place just resting on its oars.
But what our human emotions seem to require is the sight of the struggle going on. The moment the fruits are being merely eaten, things become ignoble.
Sweat and effort, human nature strained to its uttermost and on the rack, yet getting through alive, and then turning its back on its success to pursue another more rare and arduous still-this is the sort of thing the presence of which inspires us, and the reality of which it seems to be the function of all the higher forms of literature and fine art to bring home to us and suggest.
Probably a broken chain. You can recognize the extraordinary within the ordinary. Or the other way around. Your life is a miracle, an actual miracle. Your life matters because you yearn for something better. And how is death not better for some?
Your life matters because you care enough to regret your mistakes. Because you are tought to care. Because hackers and FBI are watching you through your webcam or phonecam?
There are many things humans are capable of, and nobody can take your accomplishments away from you except you. Also some people believe there is a soul and a lot of people believe they have a special connection with a higher power. I personally believe every person is meaningful and put on this world for a reason. This is dumb. I stopped reading at By whom by what? All things you cannot explain. Your list is flawed. This was a marvelous list!
I printed it out, gave one list to a friend. With another copy, we passed it around our Shabbos table, during the Friday night meal, and asked everyone to read one!
Thanks so much!!! I love this page. It is just what I needed to help make me feel more positive about myself. Thank you and bless you. Thanks for creating this page, I may be a random teenager but this page has enlightened me, even though only a bit, yet depression still strikes me. I notice the detractors sound so much like each other. I wonder in some twisted way do they find fellowship with each other on their like minded views. Do Miserable people need others like them. Like the munsters or something.
So Sad not to beleive in God. Who wants to be Sad? But they put guns in their hands, there u go, they feel powerful. Or take the child from that environment, give them family, school, friends, love.
Not saying belief is wrong, but balance is important. God said that you matter. You have a beautiful soul. Have a wonderful day. The only thing that makes me a little sad is we read so many books, we have internet in our disposal, where u can learn anything. But all the people who made a comment that the list sucks, did not actually propose any better option or way how to improve the state of mind which this website is offering. How is the house gonna build? Aha you would only suggest it if u get paid for that advice.
