So what did the Pilgrims eat and drink while on their journey to the New World?
They most likely had dried meat and fish, cheese, dried fruit, biscuits, grains, flour, and dried beans and peas. When their water supply became unfit to drink , the Pilgrims drank beer. According to what traditionally is known as "The First Thanksgiving," the feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained waterfowl, venison , lobster , clams , berries, fruit, pumpkin , and squash.
However, it was wild, not domestic, that the Pilgrims and Indians consumed. Did the Pilgrims eat turkey? They didn't have corn on the cob, apples, pears, potatoes or even cranberries. What did the Pilgrims eat for dessert? Unfortunately, pumpkin pie was not one of the desserts served at the first Thanksgiving. Some records say that the pilgrims filled hollowed out pumpkins with milk, honey and spices and baked it in hot ashes to form a custard. Did the Pilgrims eat fish? Cod and bass were also served, and it's very likely that shellfish appeared on the first Thanksgiving table because it was a common food of the day.
Pin It! Did the Pilgrims eat potatoes? Potatoes—white or sweet—would not have been featured on the table, and neither would sweet corn. Bread-based stuffing was also not made, though the Pilgrims may have used herbs or nuts to stuff birds. Did the pilgrims have milk? Any milk or cheese had to have come from goats, as the Pilgrims did not bring cows with them from England. This recipe for boiled eel includes nutmeg, lemon, and berries.
