Breaking treaties repeatedly, and for just being white faced liars in general. I love to gamble on vacation, but would never want the temptation of a casino near my home. Another difference between New Jersey casinos and those in Connecticut is that most of the patrons in New Jersey are temporary residents of the hotels and hotel-casinos. While there are hotels attached to or affiliated with Connecticut Indian casinos, most of the patrons drive to and from the gaming facilities. The Indian casinos, operated by sovereign tribes are not subject to dram shop actions for liabilities created by drunk drivers if patrons are involved in accidents after leaving the reservation.
More drinking, great idea, how about more smoking, sounds good, how about taxing prostitution and child pornography, now you are talkin. We could fill up that State treasury to overflowing. Are you people smokin some strange herb, and if so, send some here. BUT there are a lot of cheap hotels within walking distance of the casinos, and they have a lovely beach despite a lot of litter where the drunken bums can sleep it off. I completely disagree. The Government should not be in the business of deciding whom can consume what, and at what times of the day….
Casinos have often created more problems than they have solved. Encouraging reckless alcohol consumption along with person fiscal irresponsibility should surprise no one. A deeper question arises: how many communities with troubled finances embraced Indian casinos as a panacea for stalled economies and sky-rocketing taxes? Faced with a clear pattern of financial downturns in those casinos, what will the dependent communities now do to bridge the gap?
Personal responsibility. Nobody ever seems to protest the lottery which is legalized, state sponsored gambling. Most lotto tickets are sold to low income people in low income areas. People that gamble in casinos are already seriously confused. But the greater issue is whether alcohol sales should be limited to certain hours and days and locations. Why should they? Why should this product be treated differently from any other legal product?
The answer usually comes from folks who want to have government and religion work hand in hand. We have laws that protect us from drunk drivers, underage drinking, public drunkenness, etc. Do we need government to regulate WHEN we buy a product?
It is fitting and proper. Now that the Indians, the first and purest americans, have found a way to be self-sufficient……..
The Indians never polluted streams or splattered the land with dangerous elements or chemicals. Maybe you should just leave the Indians alone and redirect your scrutiny back towared the idiot financial fat cats and auto execs who are plundering this country into obsolescense. With millions out of work…..
You and others who believe that Europeans monolithically wiped out peaceful, unified indiginous tribes across the United States and Canada need to read your history. Indeed, the Spanish did some pretty terrible things on behalf of the Catholic church in the Americas, but Jews in their own country endured the Inquisition, also on behalf of the Catholic church. In addition, the literally hundreds of Native American tribes, with their own intricate web of rivalries dating back uhntold generations, negotiated alliances with newly arrived Europeans against enemy tribes and participated in their ultimate undoing in many other ways.
In a lot of places on the planet, it still works that way. Trying to apologize or make up for the past is hopeless. Apologize for slavery — no. Affirmative action — yes. So, on to the gambling and alcohol. Casino Gambling consumes more of the American dollar than all other forms of entertainment combined. This is a terrible state of affairs and you have to think the recent financial turmoil has at least some of its roots associated with this problem.
I am an American Indian Cherokee and my tribe has used this money to further educational opportunties for our people. However I also know tribes that make cash distributions to Role Members and that money goes down the tubes. This would have a double benefit of reducing or eliminating the threat of a drunk gambler driving home and would likely stimulate more room reservations for the hotel.
Enough is enough. Dispense with the parochiality of Hartford. Stop treating the people of CT like little children. The respondents, Martin and Margaret Mazurie, who operated a bar on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming, were convicted of violating the first of these two statutes.
Although they had obtained a retail liquor license from Fremont county, Wyoming, in accordance with Wyoming law, they had failed to obtain an additional license required by an ordinance adopted by the Wind River Tribe in Their conviction was then reversed by the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit for the reason that, in the opinion of that court, the term "Indian country" was unconstitutionally vague.
Mazurie , F. Page 3]] From the foregoing it appears clear to us that this decision does not, as you have speculated, mean that Indian tribes are permitted by federal law to sell liquor on reservation land without a state license or to set a minimum purchasing consumption age lower than that prescribed by our existing state statutes.
In order for a liquor sale on Indian country to be legal, notwithstanding the criminal prohibition contained in 18 U. In the Mazurie case itself, the transactions in question were illegal because, although they had been licensed by the county in accordance with state law, they had not been licensed by the tribe.
By the same token, these transactions would have been equally illegal if, although licensed by the tribe, they were not in conformity with the laws of the state in which they occurred.
It is hoped that the foregoing explanation of this case will be of some assistance to you. Very truly yours,. AGLO No.
