There have been some signs the generals are alert to the tipping point. Chris Hughes, founding partner of SCM Legal in Yangon, wrote in a note to clients this week that the law appears to be on hold. Like his clients, Hughes - who was due to return to Yangon from Sydney this month - is anxiously watching events from afar.
He says most investors are focused on ensuring the safety of their people in Myanmar and navigating the many challenges of operating in a country where internet access now depends on the whims of the military.
Still, Hughes says, people are reluctant to pull the plug on their Myanmar plays. For now they are waiting, hoping the political situation will become clearer. This could change if there is a widening of sanctions, or if the security situation deteriorates further. If that happens, Hughes says, there will be a significant reduction in existing projects. As the World Bank has demonstrated, the flow of new investments has already been affected.
