Was it any good? For the kids and nostalgic nutcases like myself, it's still charming and brings back memories. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote. This is it, folks. This is what American television has come to. What happened to the good cartoon shows of yesteryear? Now we get "American Dragon: Jake Long", easily the worst American cartoon to come along in at least a decade.
Seriously, this makes "Rocket Power" look like "Casablanca". One thing that sticks out about this show is the just-plain annoying characters. Has there ever been a more unlikable hero of a cartoon series than Jake Long voice of Dante Basco? Add some even more annoying characters like the black girl best-friend.
There's a stereotype that's been strip-mined to dust. Also, the story is just not compelling enough to make me sit still for 30 minutes. I mean, bad guys trying to take over the world through Asian magic? Once again, this concept has been done to death and better. My unreasonable dislike of "American Dragon: Jake Long" stems from the fact that I hate every single character on the show. That ain't good, considering this is from a former MTV writer.
Folks, just skip it. I am not sure what review process exists at Disney but this show hits every stereotype in the book. It's like someone watched a lot of old stoner movies about New York and then wrote this script.
It's a good show and can easily be fixed and possibly be great if they redubbed the whole thing. This show is the best! It has everything I could want in a show. The story follows Jake Long Dante Basco , a 13 year old boy who has just found out that he is a dragon. It's pretty cool until he finds out the love of his life Rose a wonderfully wicked Mae Whitman is a dragon slayer. Other voice actors are John DiMaggio Dr. This is probably one of the best Disney shows yet.
American Dragon:Jake Long is about a teenager about 13 or so who lives on the streets of New York who must find a balance between his life as a teenager and his life as the Dragon hero who protects mythical creatures and his home from the separate magical world.
As a teenager,Jake deals with his bad grades, overly controlling teacher,Professor Rockwood and his crush on the popular, new girl Rose. Although Jake has these secret feelings for her,he doesn't know her dark secret of being with the Huntsclan, some of Jake's enemies as a dragon.
Thankfully he can overcome these teenage issues with the help of his skater friends Trixie,a sassy and all-American tomboy and Spud,a dim-witted and hilarious guy. As the American Dragon,Jake has bigger issues to deal with like being tortured by his Grandfather's training and saving his city various times from his enemies and the magical world. However,Jake can get through those problems with Fu,a talkative and loyal 6,year-old dog and his Grandfather,a wise and brave man who both act as Jake's mentors.
Personally,I was looking forward to this and ended up getting more out of it. When I saw Rose,I thought she was just another useless character who was just Jake's crush and nothing more but I was wrong about that.
It even surprised me that she's actually Jake's enemy as her other ego,Huntsgirl. No one can resist the chemistry and twists in their relationship.
Jake has a riveting and fun-loving personality and is still learning about his dragon powers which is what I love. The grandfather actually has a decent background which is him being a dragon who was the only one who defeated the Dark Dragon:the worst of the enemies. Fu also has a background of being a former thief and bandit who changed after meeting Grandpa.
I looooved this series as a kid and I still love it today, rewatching it as an adult. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance, even if the dialogue can make you smile and cringe at times! AlrightGuy 14 June When I first saw the commercials for the new Disney Channel original about a hip-hop wannabe kid who changes into a dragon, I shook my head and shrugged, but of course my kids couldn't wait to see it.
After one or two shows I still didn't think too much of it, had some cute characters and some funny lines Here was a rarity in kids' cartoons: a plot.
Most kids' shows seem to avoid any ongoing plot line so they can show reruns indiscriminately without confusing anyone. This show, along with Nick's Avatar, command you to pay attention and tune in next week. My favorite moment was the oracle twins, particularly when the bubbly doomsayer told Jake "You have such a great attitude All that I can say about this show is that the programming execs really need to look at what they are putting out.
What were they thinking when they gave Trixie that voice??? The only positive thing about this show is the Huntsman who offers a little mystery to the proceedings. Still he's not enough for me to watch and he obviously wasn't enough for Disney fans either.
Maybe fans of Disney shows should write and tell them that they want shows like what Disney had in or , when quality seemed to be more important than quantity. OzzyZikeFan 9 January
